Thailand Visa 101

Thai Visa Law

Under Thai Law, you cannot study while using a tourist visa and you cannot work on an education visa ‘ED.’

ED Visa on Arrival

When you first enter Thailand with a student visa, you will receive only 90 days.  After 90 days, you will need to extend your visa at the immigration office.  Paperwork required can be filled out in building 19 on the 9th floor.

Validity of the Visa

Your visa is valid for 1 year and is only valid if you stay in Thailand.  Once you leave the country, your visa becomes expired and you cannot re-enter Thailand unless you apply for a new student visa.

Re-entry to Thailand

If you wish to re-enter Thailand with the same visa, you must apply for re-entry before you leave Thailand at the immigration office or the airport.

90 Day Check-in

During your stay within Thailand, students are required to report to immigration every 90 days to confirm your address.

Multiple Entry Visa

Some students may have a multiple entry student visa and after being in the country for 90 days, they can extend the visa at immigration or leave the country and come back in.

First Issuance of Non-Immigrant 'ED' Visa (required Documents)

New Undergraduate Students
  1. Passport or travel document (all pages) with validity not less than six (6) months
  2. Departure card
  3. Visa application form completely filled out
  4. Recent (4 cm. x 6 cm.) photograph of the applicant
  5. Recommendation letter addressed to the home origin Consulate
  6. Letter of acceptance from the concerned academic institute/organization
  7. An official letter approving the enrollment of foreign students and a copy of registration certificate of the concerned academic institute is required.
  8. High school degree certificate or transcript
  9. Original receipt of
    Tuition Fees
New Graduate Students

Visa Extension or Renewal 'ED'

Requirements
  1. Fill the Visa extension form ( at the International Student Service, 9th Floor)
  2. Passport, with remaining validity of not less than 6 months
  3. 2 copies of Passport (all pages)
  4. 2 copies of Departure Card
  5. 2 copies of Student ID
  6. Original Transcript from the registration office (Building 12, 1st floor) and 1 copy of it
  7. 2 copies of Receipt from the finance office ( Building 19, 1st floor)
  8. 1 copy of the Residential Tenancy Agreement
  9. 1 copy of Abbot Certification Letter ( for Monk only)
  10. For new Bachelor students: 2 copies of High School Degree Certificate and Transcript
  11. For new Master students:
    2 copies of Bachelor Degree Certificate and Transcript
Other Remarks
  • Please bring your original passport and original student id when you submit the required documents at the International Student Service.
  • Bachelor’s student should enroll a minimum of 18 credits or 6 subjects per semester.
  • Master’s student should enroll a minimum of 12 credits or 4 subjects per semester.

Fines & Notification

*The notification period is subject to changes according to the Immigrant Bureau Policy. Please check their website for latest updates.*

  • If students stay in Thailand over 90 days without notifying the Immigrant Bureau later than the specified period, a fine of 2,000 THB will be charged. If a student who does not submit the 90- day notification is arrested, they will be fined 4,000 THB.
  • If students leave the country and then re-enter, the counting of the next 90-day period starts at 1 in every case.
  • The notification of staying in Thailand over 90 days is in no way equivalent to a Visa Extension.

Re-entry Permits

Travel Outside of Thailand

Students who plan to spend their holidays outside of Thailand need to apply for a single or multiple re-entry permit before their departure.

 

If this is not done, the  Non-immigrant “ED” visa will be invalidated and students must attain a new student visa at a Thai Embassy or Consulate outside Thailand.

 

The re-entry permit can be obtained at the Immigration Bureau and the airport.

Documents for Re-entry
  1. Re-entry Permit form TM.8 available at Immigration Bureau Website
  2. One recent 4 by 6 cm full-face photo
  3. Make 1 copy of each of the following: first page of the passport, visa page, departure card, and latest immigration stamp.

1,000 THB for a single entry or 3,800 THB for a multiple entry permit. (price is subject to change)

Visa Cancellations

Returning Home or Graduation

Those students holding a Non-Immigrant ‘ED’ Visa that are graduating or returning home after an exchange semester MUST contact the International Student Affairs office to request a visa cancellation letter.

 

If the students wishes to study at another university in Thailand, they must also request a visa cancellation letter from the International Student Affairs Office

Fines & Notifications

If students do not cancel the visa on time, students could be fined up to 500 THB per day from the day of graduation or the day students are accepted by another institution or organization.

 

According to the Thai Immigration policy, students must leave the country within 24 hours of canceling the ‘ED’ visa.

It is the responsibility of the student to process the necessary paperwork on time.  Siam University and the staff cannot be held responsible if your documents are turned into the Immigration Bureau late.

The University Visa Department is located in building 19 on the 9th floor in room 903 (19-903).  All forms can be attained at this office.

Yes.  If the student is within the permitted time period (designated by the Immigration Bureau), then the visa can be changes.  The required documents are the same as the visa extension and forms can be received from the University Visa Department (19-903)
